Ventura is located on the Californian coast, northwest of Los Angeles. A narrow valley with steeply sloping terrain on either side is defined by the Ventura River flowing through the western part of the city. The steep foothills of Ventura border the northern part of the town. A large portion of the eastern part of the city is situated on a very flat alluvial coastal plain that runs along the western edge of the Oxnard Plain. Several Barrancas extend from the slopes to the Santa Clara River, which marks the city's southern boundary. At the beginning of the Santa Clara River Valley, the city reaches Saticoy, a historic settlement.

Ventura has been inhabited by the Chumash Native Indians and other groups for over 10,000 years. The city got its name from the Mission San Buenaventura, established by Junipero Serra in 1782 after the arrival of Spanish missionaries. As part of the Mexican secularization of the Californian missions, Governor Pio Pico gave San Buenaventura to Don Jose de Arnaz as Rancho Ex-Mission San Buenaventura, where a small settlement began to develop. Following the American invasion of California, San Buenaventura became a city in 1866. Thanks to the significant oil boom of the 1920s and the subsequent post-World War II economic expansion, Ventura underwent substantial development and growth.
