Salt Lake City (SLC) is the capital and largest city in Utah, USA. It is often abbreviated as Salt Lake and is located in Salt Lake County, the most populous county in Utah. The city had a population of 200,133 residents in 2020 and is at the heart of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which had 1,257,936 residents in the same year. Additionally, Salt Lake City is part of the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo Combined Statistical Area, covering a 120-mile stretch of the Wasatch Front and housing a population of 2,746,164 (according to 2021 forecasts).

In 1847, Brigham Young led a group of pioneer immigrants to establish Salt Lake City as a refuge from the persecution they had faced in their previous eastern homes. Upon arriving, the Mormons settled in a semi-arid valley and immediately began constructing a vast irrigation system to sustain the growing population. The city's grid follows a typical compass pattern, with the Salt Lake meridian situated at the southeast corner of Temple Square, which is home to the Salt Lake Temple. Its close proximity to the Great Salt Lake led to its initial name, Great Salt Lake City.
