Des Moines, a city in Iowa, is both the state capital and the most densely populated city. It also serves as the county seat of Polk County and partially extends into Warren County. The city was incorporated on September 22, 1851, under the name Fort Des Moines, which was later abbreviated to Des Moines in 1857.

Des Moines is believed to have gotten its name from the Des Moines River, which is thought to have derived its name from the French expression "Rivière des Moines," meaning "River of the Monks." According to the United States Census Bureau's 2019 estimate, the metropolitan region, which covers six counties, has a population of 699,292 residents and is ranked 83rd in the United States. It is also the most populous metropolitan area exclusively located within the state.
