Established in 1670, Charleston was originally named Charles Town after King Charles II. The city first thrived at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River (now called Charles Towne Landing), but in 1680 it was relocated to its present location, which rapidly became the fifth-largest city in North America within ten years.

Charleston, located in the state of South Carolina, serves as the most populous city in the region, the county seat of Charleston County, and the central city in the Charleston-North Charleston metropolitan area.
